earth laughs in flowers

Just in time for spring, another lovely creation by Sarah Rainwater Design: Edible Flower Heirloom Seed Kit, available in Sarah’s shop on Etsy.

In Sarah’s words, “These heirloom edible flower seeds were chosen because they all pose a minimal challenge for the novice gardener and can be successfully grown indoors or out in almost any US climate.”

Each kit includes:
• 4 types of heirloom flower seeds in glass vials (calendula, lemon mint, nasturtium and starflower)
• A custom laser engraved wooden block with vials for holding seeds or displaying fresh flowers
• 4 biodegradable folded paper pots for starting the seeds
• 1 wooden crate
• Seed starting soil
• Folded poster with growing instructions and a harvest recipe

soul’s quest for home, sparrow salvage on etsy

Purl Bee Pinterest board led me to Quince with Sugar Tumblr  led me to Sparrow Salvage’s Flickr led me to Little Brown Bird on Etsy. A beautiful journey, which I highly recommend to you, finally led me to one talented lady, Penny Elizabeth Neal. I cannot wait to see Penny’s shop once she returns to it here. While I wait for Penny’s return, I will browse through her past, gorgeously photographed, offerings...

amazing artists of our time, gathering together...

Every year Sang An and his husband Bob Bathrick get on their bikes and ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles to raise money and awareness for AIDS/HIV. The ride is 575 miles long, and takes 7 days. I did a similar ride from Boston to NYC in 1997, it was a mere 300 miles, and let me tell you, my bum hurt, and so did the rest of my body. I didn’t really mind the pain as it was an incredible, community supported experience, and I am proud to have been a part of it. My close friend from high school, Todd, died from AIDS when he was in his 20’s, and I rode in his memory. And it is with Todd in my heart that I donate a gleena piece to the auction organized by Sang each year.

Sang and Bob have raised tens of thousands of dollars for AIDS/HIV research, awareness, and support through BANG, an online auction of photography and artwork by some of the most talented artists practicing today. Go here to view the selections: 1st Gear, and then click through to 2nd Gear, 3rd Gear, and so on. Here are a few samples of photographs being auctioned:

a tale of slow blooming, continued...

I was fascinated this year with my amaryllis’ blooming... so many different stages it went through. It took its time unfurling, pausing before the next transformation. Last year’s blooming can be seen here, and seemed to happen faster. Or maybe I am just much more present, contemplative, and observant these days.
