still life saturday with john frederick peto

John Frederic Peto (1854-1907) was an American painter who never had a gallery exhibition. Peto made a living by playing cornet (an instrument very similar to the trumpet), taking in seasonal boarders, and selling his paintings to tourists in the resort town of Island Heights, New Jersey.

christopher baker: the master of light

Christopher Baker, a photographer based in New York City, is a light genius. I say this having been lucky to have worked with Chris on numerous occasions, from tulip to food to beauty stories. On each photo shoot I have learned so much, and was completely blown away by his attention to detail. I was also fortunate to have helped with Chris’s website, again his magical eye lent a sophistication rarely found in this fast-paced world.

The above images are from a recent story Chris created for Whole Living magazine, one of my favorite publications.

spring forward with sarah rainwater’s seed kits

Spring is in the air, a bit early, but I’ll take it! And it’s the perfect time to start your own herb garden. Sarah Rainwater created these lovely heirloom seed kits as an easy window box starter. Everything you need is included:
• 6 types of heirloom seeds in a custom-designed laser etched wooden box
• 6 biodegradable folded paper pots for starting the seeds
• seed starting soil
• 1 wooden crate
• 1 2012 calendar including instructions for growing and a recipe

Once the seeds sprout, you can transfer them outdoors by planting the paper pots directly into the soil. So easy! The seed kits are available on Sarah’s etsy shop.

meaningful abstraction

Not sure how I stumbled upon these mesmerizing anonymous tantric paintings shown on Feature Inc.’s website. Each painting is drawn on found paper to represent the principles of Tantra, a philosophical and spiritual Indian practice. The shapes and colors feel so right, their simplicity infused with deeper meanings.

a house-full of fragrant lovelies

I was away for a week at the NY Gift Fair, and came home to a house-full of blooming paper whites. The bulbs were given to me by a friend a few weeks ago, and were just starting to come up when I left. A very pleasant surprise.
